BIOINFORMATICS IN

EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

AP.7

How does bioinformatics play a role in evolutionary studies?

Evolutionary biology studies the diversity that evolved through life on Earth starting from a common ancestor. It is essentially an attempt to establish evolutionary relationships between organisms. Before bioinformatics came into play, evolutionary relationships were hypothesized mainly on physical appearance of the organisms. Now that bioinformatics have made gene sequencing possible, scientists are able to compare the genomes of organisms. Bioinformatics can also provide  Thus, giving them a more accurate idea of the evolutionary relationship. the percentage of shared DNA, the amount of homologous genes, etc.
