what is molecular medicine?

By understanding the way genes, proteins, and other cellular molecules work, research in molecular medicine achieves to develop ways to diagnose and treat disease. Molecular medicine uses bioinformatics in order to understand the cause and mechanisms of disease on a molecular level. Researchers apply these information in hopes of finding prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for diseases.

How does bioinformatics play a role in molecular medicine?

If you combine molecular medicine and bioinformatics, medicine in the postgenomic era will be able to utilize thousands of disease-associated molecular markers provided through sequencing and functional genomic, proteomic and metabolomic studies. These techniques will eventually link clinical medicine based on the molecular orientated diagnostics with the prediction and prevention of disease. In order to do this, large-scale and genome-wide biological and medical data must be combined with biostatistical and bioinformatic analyses to model biological systems.
