INNOVATORS

Without innovators, the world of bioinformatics will be just an imagination.

I.1

23andme

23andMe allows for individuals who are curious about their ancestry, understand where they came from through genetic code in cheek cells. With the saliva you've provided contained with cheek cells, 23andMe scientists copies the DNA, duplicating it until there is enough DNA to be genotyped. The DNA is then cut into smaller pieces, which are then applied to a small glass slide with microscopic beads on the surface. The beads are attached to DNA that matches with the tested genetic variants. If the DNA is matched with the probe, then it will become fluorescent and allow for individuals to understand their own human genome.

I.2

snpedia

SNpedia is a bioinformatics website that focuses on investigating human genetics. Promethease uses SNPedia in order to link an individual's DNA variations to the information published about them. You may ask, what is Promethease? Promethease is a literature retrieval system that creates a personal DNA report based on your DNA data.

I.3

CODIS

Combined DNA Index System, otherwise known as "Codis" is a software used by the FBI in order to match DNA profiles in DNA databases. Codis contains DNA profiles of people who have been convicted of crimes. Codis was originally a pilot database created in 1990, however the DNA Identification Act of 1994 formalized the FBI's authority National DNA Index System for law enforcement purposes. The FBI uses CODIS to search and store  DNA profiles obtained from crime scene evidence against DNA profiles from other crime scenes and convicted offenders.

Genetech

Genetech is a biotechnology company that researches and develop medicine in order to treat patients with serious or life threatening conditions. Genetech's focus is to create a medicine that will ultimately cure diseases such as cancer or hemophilia.

NCBI

The National Center for Biotechnology Information also known as the NCBI holds a database for nucleotide and protein sequence data. It is a part of the National Library for Medicine which provides access to biological, biomedical, and genomic information. The NCBI provides a source for scientists, or ordinary humans to learn more about gene sequences, gene alleles and mutations, the human genome, etc.
